I have had chronic pain for a number of years and would like to share my experiences and also hear of yours.
I have degenerative discs and arthritis and am in pain daily. Lately I have been managing my pain very well with light exercise and stretching, aspirin and the occasional Vicoden, rest, and when needed, something to relax the muscles. I often use a TENS unit and if I am not driving, will have a drink or two to dull the pain.
I took a pain management course through Kaiser and that really helped me to deal with the pain. I recommend that to anyone who is struggling with pain management issues.

AND THIS LAST CHRISTMAS I GOT TO MEET A NEW DR. FROM OUT EAST . THAT HAS THE WORLD BY THE TAIL. AND HE KNEW ALL ABOUT THIS PUMP. AND I CAN"T SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS ABOUT IT. I REFILL EVERY 3 MO. Suggestion for Disc Pain
Figuratively, as the saying goes, I feel your pain. Personally, I suffer from migraines, but I know someone in my family who had a slipped disc recently. The best treatment he has had so far is something called osteopathic manipulation. My father (who has the disc in question!) sees a primary care physician who has a DO degree, which is a bit different than a regular doctor. In addition to the occasional Vicoden on flare up days my dad is treated with manipulation therapy on a regular basis from his doctor, he swears by it to relieve the severe pain he feels.
Maybe this is something to look into? It's a great thing to have a site like this where people can throw out recommendations like this. I hope you feel better Deb.
managing pain
I know several people who have had similar arthritis pain. At least 2 of them have found that medications such as naprosyn are just as effective as vicodin because naprosyn can reduce inflammation, which vicodin does not. i know some people as well who have had back problems and they found that a chiropractor was the best able to provide some pain relief.
Pain
I don't know that pain is really managable, it's more or less bearable at best for me. I don't even know if it's that.
I tried to shovel 2 days ago for about 5 minutes and I am still feeling the pain. My 2 year old leans on me and I feel like crying. I just tell myself to breath. So I guess I breath to manage my pain.
